Invitational Preview - nyxnyxnyx Scorpion/Dragon enigma

nyxnyxnyx started sin season 2 and is a player from Indonesia who lives/works currently in Singapore. He started with Dragon but then switched to Scorpion and his steadily improved ever since.

Season 2

An impressive start saw him going 4-0 though this was probably less regarded as no less than two hapless Unicorn players were involved and a blind player without a deck had a good chance of easily beating Unicorn players back in the depths of season two.

Wins vs Unicorn Malst [1449], Crane Daidoji Clegane [1646], Dragon OzilGoazil [1409], Unicorn Grody [1384]

Season 2 Cup  with Dragon

A good showing in the cup through a field of Scorpion must have been highly unpleasant ..

T64 beat Scorpion Shosuro Nostred [1319]
T32 beat Scorpion Calimsha [1635]
T16 lost to Scorpion SirLargeness [1740]

Season 3 - Start Rating 1776 with Dragon

nyx went 4-1 actual (6-1 with drops) in the pod getting yet another Unicorn showing those admin bribes were working well.

Wins vs Unicorn Lenca [1218], Phoenix Kiagamai Jubai (sla-dreamer) [1328], Crab Jokingly [1774], Crab TheLazyninja [1500]

Losses vs Dragon PropositionDirk [1379]

Season 3 Cup

He marched past Toreadory before falling to high ranked Isawa Eujin

T64 beat Lion Toreadory [1563]
T32 lost to Phoenix Isawa Eujin [1867]

Season 4 - Start Rating  1761 as Scorpion

Showing himself the master of the four pod wins in season 4 he again went 4-0 actual (7-0 with drops) taking 1st place in the pod. Note another Unicorn. In this case a zombiecorn. Nyx had at this point switched from Dragon to the dark side of the force. Sorry Scorpion. Mainly because he wanted to figure Scorpion out. Unfortunately the dark side of the force is hard to resist. Either that or he has spent a long time now figuring things out.

Wins vs Phoenix Mish [1500], Crane Fyeya [1630], Lion Firesa [1642], Unicorn Tsuke [1681]

Season 4 Cup

Back to the Top 16 before losing to top Crane Daidoji Micah.

T64 beat Dragon Chaley [1714]
T32 beat Crane Brundim [1593]
T16 lost to Crane Daidoji Micah [1996]

Season 5 - Start Rating 1851 - More Scorpion

Still playing Scorpion he unsurprisingly met another pod Unicorn (why don't I ever get pod Unicorns? I have had, erm lets count, that's it ZERO Unicorns in five seasons. Bet you can guarantee that just when Unicorn jump in strength I will get them THEN). This goes to show that FFG and the League favours Scorpion (and potential Scorpion) players in all things.

Anyway back on point nyx did the unexpected and went 6-1 obviously deciding 'just' 4 wins was for suckers this included a strong win versus Micah.

Wins vs Crane Daidoji Micah [1996], Crane Simcof [1406], Dragon Hos [1480], Phoenix Shiba Chicken [1500], Scorpion Kweti Ahtu [1500], Unicorn mortalityvalor [1500]
Losses vs Lion Toreadory [1590]

Season 5 Cup

nyx obviously was starting to get the hang of the pure evil that is Scorpion and is (currently) in a top 8 bout versus Chutereve.

T64 beat Lion Seba_stian [1462]
T32 beat Phoenix idlippy [1783]
T16 beat Lion Wharrison [1661]
T8 beat Crane Chutereve [1682]
T4 vs Phoenix Demagogue [1723]

LCQ

Equally strong was his performance in the last chance qualifier where he powered to the top 8 where he eventually conceded prior to his top 8 game (which he then won in reality but had lost due to the concede) vs double Kotei winner Sliski as he had enough points to qualify without getting to the top 4.

T64 beat Crane Kakitaki [1700]
T32 beat Crane Jeremy [1691]
T16 beat Crab Csonti [1685]
T8 beat (though conceded) Scorpion Sliski [1700]

Though early on a perennial mid-rounder  his play has steadily improved from even that high place and nyx gains his place in the invitational due to his late season strong runs (and potentially a cup win in 5)

As always the qwuestionnaire was sent out and here are the responses.

Did you play a lot of Original L5R? and if so how long/when

Nope. I had heard of it before though a few years back and researched it a bit thinking of getting into it, but held off due to the game's age and low player count in my area.

Do/have you played other competitive card games at a high level?

Mostly other FFG games. Android:Netrunner, Warhammer:Conquest, AGoTv2.

What were your experiences of the Discord League – any highlights ?

It's been great having access to games with the international community and most likely the highest-level competition out there. We all know paper meta isn't real anyway.Personally I've been doing pretty well in the leagues and winning is preferable to not winning so it's all :ok:. A personal highlight for me was a very early win against Calimsha. Later on it was nice to take a win off a two-time Kotei winner (Jakub/Sliski) through the most convoluted means possible. I'd highly recommend watching that game if you need an impetus to pull out all your hair.

Do you have any advice for the other lower ranked players?

Manage your expectations. (you *will* lose a lot)

What is there that you like/dislike about new L5R and what would you like (or not like) to see moving forward.

I like the fate mechanic. It changes how cards and stuff are evaluated and is quite 'fresh' as far as card game mechanics go.

I dislike roles and how they're locked. I don't think it's a coincidence that the 3 Seeker clans are all top dog, Seeker is really that much better than Keeper IMO. Related, province selection being tied to roles is also lame especially when provinces are so swingy.

It's also crazy that we already have so many prohibition effects so early in the game. Guest of Honor and Tadaka are just going to make the attachments-too-good problem even more pronounced.

What are your favourite/least favourite matchups?

Favourite: Scorpion mirror. Lots of interesting stuff happens and splashes change the matchup a lot.

Least: Anything with Dragon provinces involved. The guessing game is pretty lame.
